LAHORE: The Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has expanded its free public Wi-Fi initiative across the province, aiming to enhance digital access and public safety. According to a spokesperson for Safe Cities, the free internet service is currently available at 952 key locations across 23 districts of Punjab, including 442 locations in Lahore alone.

So far, the initiative has served more than 58 million users, who have collectively consumed 1,191 terabytes of data. The service is being provided in high-traffic and critical public areas such as markets, transport terminals, hospitals, and government offices.
In a major new step, the Punjab government has also announced the rollout of free Wi-Fi in 450 government colleges for women. The move is intended to enhance digital learning, ensure better protection for female students, and provide quick access to emergency services.
“This initiative is a part of the government’s broader vision to transform Punjab into a modern and digital province,” said the spokesperson. However, the PSCA noted that the free internet is meant strictly for emergency use and essential services, not for video streaming or entertainment purposes.
SAFE CITY PROJECT TO BE EXPANDED
Earlier this year in February, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had directed the authorities concerned to launch Smart Safe City Project in every district of the province by the year-end.
CM Maryam also inspected Safe City Authority’s data centre and digital wall. She also visited the Madadgar-15 call centre. She also instructed to launch an upgraded “Women Safety App” for the protection of women.

The chief minister was also given a detailed briefing on the test run of the Safe City Crime Stopper app, aiming to prevent rising crime. Cases related to terrorism, violence and other crimes can be reported from the app.
