Schools in Punjab resume classes after extended winter break

punjab schools reopen

LAHORE: After a prolonged winter break due to smog and intense cold, schools in Punjab have finally reopened, bringing students back to their classrooms on Wednesday.

The winter break, which began on December 18, 2023, was initially set to conclude on January 1, 2024. However, persistent smog and extreme cold weather conditions led to an extension of the holidays until January 9, 2024.

In response to the prevailing early morning fog and chilly temperatures, authorities have adjusted the school timings. Starting from today until January 22, primary, middle, high, and higher secondary schools will open at 9:30 am and conclude at 3:30 pm.

The caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi, confirmed the reopening of schools on X (formerly Twitter).

He emphasized the government’s commitment to prioritize the safety and well-being of students. Naqvi advised children to wear warm clothes and jackets to shield themselves from the severe cold.

The decision to extend the winter break was rooted in the recognition of the unusually harsh winter, marked by a significant drop in temperatures across the province.

This measure aimed to ensure the safety and health of students during adverse weather conditions.

Parents have expressed support for the extended winter break, considering it a crucial step to safeguard their children.

The government’s focus on the safety and health of students remains evident, with ongoing monitoring of weather conditions.

Officials assert that any future decisions regarding school timings or holidays will prioritize the best interests of the students.

As schools in Punjab reopened their doors, parents and students are urged to stay informed about updates from their respective educational institutions.
