Section 144 extended across Punjab for seven more days amid security concerns

Punjab Section 144

LAHORE: The Punjab Home Department has extended the enforcement of Section 144 across the province for another seven days, citing heightened security concerns and the need to maintain public order. The restriction will now remain in place until Saturday, November 15.

Under the extended order, all kinds of protests, sit-ins, and similar public activities remain banned under the extension. The order also prohibits gatherings of four or more people in public places, the display of weapons, and the use of loudspeakers. Additionally, the publication and distribution of inflammatory or sectarian material are strictly forbidden.

The use of loudspeakers, except in limited circumstances, is also banned. According to the notification, loudspeakers may only be used for Azan (call to prayer) and Friday sermons, while the publication and distribution of inflammatory, hateful, or sectarian material have also been strictly prohibited.

Officials said that the decision was made to preserve law and order, protect lives and property, and address concerns over potential terrorist threats. Authorities warned that large public processions and sit-ins could serve as “soft targets” for terrorist attacks.

The Home Department clarified that the restrictions do not apply to wedding ceremonies, funerals, or burials. Government officers and officials performing official duties, as well as court activities, are also exempt from the ban.

The Punjab government urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure peace and security during this period.
