Security forces kill 22 militants in KP inelligence-based operation

ISLAMABAD: ISLAMABAD: Security forces killed 22 militants in an intelligence-based operation in Khyber district, the military’s media wing said on Friday, as the country presses ahead with an intensified counter-terrorism campaign.

The operation was carried out on April 21 after reports of militant presence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s tribal region, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement.

Troops and law enforcement agencies engaged in a “heavy exchange of fire” with militants during the raid, killing 22 fighters linked to what the military described as “Indian-sponsored Fitna al-Khwarij,” a term used by the state for members of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

The ISPR said that the militants opened indiscriminate fire “out of fear of capture,” resulting in the death of a 10-year-old child.

Weapons and ammunition were recovered from the dead militants, who were allegedly involved in multiple attacks in the area, the statement added.

A follow-up search operation is under way to clear the area of any remaining fighters.

Pakistan has seen a resurgence in militant violence, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and neighbouring Balochistan, prompting authorities to ramp up intelligence-based operations under a broader counter-terrorism strategy.

Despite a high number of militant casualties in recent operations, attacks have increased in recent years, with security forces frequently targeted. Officials say operations will continue “at full pace” to eliminate what they describe as foreign-backed militancy.
