Selection conundrum for PCT: potential replacements for Naseem Shah

COLOMBO/LAHORE: As the final of the Asia Cup 2023 looms, Sri Lanka won the toss against India today and chose to bat first. However, rain being the consistent spoil sport in this tournament delayed the starting of the game, adding to the frustration of fans in this rain-plagued tournament.

For Pakistani cricket enthusiasts, though, a different cloud of concern looms large.

The primary worry gripping Pakistan’s cricket faithful is the injury sustained by their young pace sensation, Naseem Shah, and the uncertainty surrounding his participation in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. Naseem’s shoulder injury, sustained during the Pakistan vs. India clash in the ongoing Asia Cup, has raised doubts about his availability for the cricketing extravaganza set to take place in India.

On Saturday, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) issued a statement regarding Naseem Shah’s health, acknowledging the injury’s severity and the potential implications it may have on his participation in the World Cup. The news of his injury compounds the woes of a Pakistani Cricket Team’s (PCT) squad already grappling with injury concerns.

Haris Rauf and Ihsanullah are also nursing injuries, further muddling the picture of who will make it into Pakistan’s final squad for the global tournament. Even Mohammad Hasnain’s fitness remains a question mark as he continues his rehabilitation from an injury sustained in England.

The heartbroken fans of the green shirts have taken to social media platforms to express their anguish and engage in fervent speculation regarding Naseem’s replacement if he remains unfit for the World Cup.

Potential Replacements

Zaman Khan:

The immediate replacement that comes to mind is Zaman Khan, who filled in for Naseem during the Pakistan vs. Sri Lanka match in the Asia Cup. Although his debut performance in that match didn’t garner much attention, Zaman boasts an impressive record in the T20 format. While he has yet to make a significant mark in ODIs, the chances of him being included in the 15-man World Cup squad are high.

Hassan Ali:

Another viable option is Hassan Ali, who stands out due to his extensive international experience. With 91 wickets in 60 ODIs and a stellar performance in the 2017 Champions Trophy, Hassan Ali’s track record speaks volumes. His batting prowess also adds to his candidacy as a replacement for Naseem Shah, making him a multifaceted asset.

Shahnawaz Dahani:

Although Shahnawaz Dahani lacks the international exposure of Hassan Ali, he brings incredible speed to the table, consistently clocking over 140 kilometers per hour. Having represented Pakistan in ODIs and T20s, Dahani showcased his potential by grabbing a wicket in his debut game against the West Indies.

Mohammad Wasim Jr.:

Wasim was a part of Pakistan’s squad for the Asia Cup 2023 but he got to bowl only three overs in the crucial game against Sri Lanka. However, he has a track record with the PCT and has bagged 24 wickets in 16 ODIs that he has played for Pakistan. He is also known for 145 kph bowling speed which makes him another strong candidate to replace Naseem Shah.

The Countdown to ICC World Cup 2023:

Scheduled to be held in India, the ICC World Cup 2023 is poised to be a monumental event in the cricketing calendar, featuring 10 teams and spanning across 10 venues. The tournament will unfold from October 5 to November 19, offering cricket fans around the world a thrilling spectacle.

Teams must finalize their 15-player squads by September 28, as per the tournament’s regulations. Any replacements made after this date will require approval from the International Cricket Council (ICC).

While Pakistan’s cricket team will undoubtedly find a replacement for Naseem Shah, his absence, if confirmed, will be deeply felt by the legions of fans.
