WEB DESK: The death toll of American personnel following Iran’s large-scale offensive on March 1 has risen to seven, after a servicemember succumbed to injuries sustained during the attacks in Saudi Arabia.
According to CNN, US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the death on Sunday, noting that the individual had been in a serious condition since the initial strikes targeted US bases and infrastructure across the Middle East.
In accordance with military protocol, the identity of the deceased is being withheld for 24 hours to ensure that next of kin have been fully notified. The fatality marks the first reported American death from the Saudi Arabian theatre of the current conflict, following the high-profile loss of six Army Reserve soldiers in Kuwait during the same wave of hostilities.
The announcement comes at a moment of high national mourning in the United States. Only a day prior, a dignified transfer ceremony was held at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware for the six soldiers killed at the Port of Shuaiba. President Donald Trump, who attended the ceremony alongside senior military officials, met with the grieving families as the fallen were returned to American soil.
President Trump reaffirms commitment to Middle East campaign
Despite the mounting casualties, President Trump has signalled that the loss of life has not shaken his resolve regarding the war with Iran. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, the President stated that his interactions with the families at Dover Air Force Base had only strengthened his determination to continue the military campaign. He claimed that the parents of the fallen had urged him to “win this” for their children, suggesting that a withdrawal would be a disservice to their sacrifice.
While acknowledging the likelihood of further losses in the coming weeks, the President described the casualties as an unavoidable “part of war.” The conflict, which escalated sharply following the unannounced strikes on March 1, continues to strain regional stability as US forces remain on high alert across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and neighbouring Kuwait.
In a separate development, the Pentagon confirmed the death of a New York National Guard soldier in Kuwait, though officials clarified this was not the result of enemy action. Major Sorffly Davius, 46, a veteran New York City police officer, died following a “health-related incident” at Camp Buehring on March 6. An investigation into the circumstances of the medical emergency is currently underway.
