CRANS MONTANA: A fire broke out in a popular bar at the Swiss ski resort of Crans Montana in the early hours of New Year’s Day, killing an unspecified number of people, authorities said. Emergency services continue to respond to the scene, with details of casualties still emerging.
The incident occurred at around 01:30 local time (00:30 GMT) at Le Constellation Bar, a well-known venue in the resort that can accommodate up to 300 people. Police confirmed that more than 100 individuals were inside at the time of the fire. While the precise number of deaths is not yet known, officials said “several” people had been killed, and others injured.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Initial reports suggested an explosion, with unverified accounts hinting that pyrotechnics may have been involved. Swiss police have established a helpline for concerned families at +41 848 112 117.
The bar, which has been a fixture in Crans Montana for over 40 years, is known for its casual atmosphere and live football screenings. According to witnesses, the venue was crowded with a mix of locals, tourists, and young revelers celebrating New Year’s Eve.
Authorities have set up a cordon around the site, and a no-fly zone has been imposed over the area. Forensic teams are on the scene conducting investigations. Local media reported that residents nearby heard the explosion and saw hours of ambulance activity following the fire.
Journalists at the scene described the atmosphere as one of shock, with emergency personnel and law enforcement managing the ongoing response. Officials continue to urge caution while the investigation is underway and further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
This tragic event comes during one of the busiest nights of the year in Crans Montana, a resort famous for its luxury tourism and winter sports, including hosting World Cup skiing events in the past.
