Shai Hope joins elite list with 6000 ODI runs amid West Indies’ struggle

Second fastest Shai Hope

West Indies captain Shai Hope has crossed a major milestone, becoming the second-fastest West Indies player to reach 6000 runs in One Day Internationals.

The wicketkeeper-batter achieved the feat in 142 innings during the second ODI against New Zealand at McLean Park in Napier, narrowly trailing the legendary Sir Vivian Richards, who reached 6000 runs in 141 innings.

Hope’s achievement also places him joint sixth globally alongside South Africa’s Quinton de Kock for the fastest to reach 6000 ODI runs.

Only a handful of players have reached this mark quicker, including Hashim Amla and Babar Azam (123 innings), Virat Kohli (136 innings), and Kane Williamson and David Warner (139 innings). Hope has been one of West Indies’ most consistent performers in recent years, accumulating 18 centuries and 30 half-centuries in ODIs.

West Indies face early collapse

Despite Hope’s milestone, West Indies’ innings on November 19 has been under severe pressure. New Zealand won the toss and chose to bowl first, with John Campbell dismissed cheaply for four runs in the sixth over by Kyle Jamieson. A dramatic collapse followed as wickets fell rapidly in the 10th, 12th, and 15th overs, leaving West Indies reeling at 86 for five after 16 overs.

Kyle Jamieson, Nathan Smith, and Mitchell Santner were the main wicket-takers, putting the visitors in a commanding position. Shai Hope and Justin Greaves are currently at the crease, trying to stabilise the innings.

All-rounders Romario Shepherd and Jayden Seales are yet to bat, and their contributions could be crucial if West Indies hope to post a competitive total on a rain-affected pitch.
