WEB DESK: Africa’s most ambitious historical drama, ‘Shaka iLembe’, will return for its third and final season in 2026, bringing the epic saga of the legendary Zulu king to a powerful close.

Currently in production, the final chapter promises intense drama, betrayal, and high-stakes battles as it explores the fall of King Shaka’s reign. The critically acclaimed series has captivated viewers across the continent for two seasons, becoming a cultural touchstone and South Africa’s most expensive television production to date.

A FITTING END TO A HISTORIC JOURNEY

Nomzamo Mbatha, who stars as Queen Nandi and also serves as Executive Producer, reflected on the magnitude of the series’ final arc, “The pressure is high. Shaka iLembe has been a beloved show for the past two seasons, and the project of my career. This third season is the culmination of a world that African viewers have found deep love and admiration for.”

Season 3 is expected to depict the final years of Shaka’s rule, marked by political instability, betrayals within the royal court, and the arrival of foreign powers. According to early reports, Queen Nandi will be hiding a devastating secret, adding further intrigue to the internal conflict.

THE THREAT FROM THE WEST AND A CLIMACTIC CONCLUSION

British officer Francis Fynn will make his debut, leading colonial forces into Port Natal. His arrival signals the beginning of European expansion into Zulu territory – a major historical turning point that will heighten the series’ tension and drama.

The final season is also expected to feature the much-anticipated final battle that seals Shaka’s fate, rounding off a story that began with his painful childhood and journey to becoming a revolutionary warrior king.

Returning to the screen are Lemogang Tsipa as the adult Shaka and Nomzamo Mbatha as Queen Nandi, along with a host of familiar faces from the award-winning ensemble.
