Shehbaz announces Rs200 surge in high-octane fuel price per litre

Will citizens get yet another blow of increase in petrol prices tomorrow?

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday approved a significant Rs200 per litre increase in the levy on high-octane fuel, pushing its total levy to Rs300 per litre.

The decision was taken during a virtual meeting chaired by the premier, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.

The move comes after the prime minister took notice of the earlier Rs100 per litre levy on high-octane fuel and directed authorities to enhance it further.

Officials said the increase is expected to generate approximately Rs9 billion in monthly savings for the national exchequer, providing fiscal relief amid ongoing economic challenges.

During the meeting, the prime minister emphasised the need to increase revenue through targeted measures that do not burden the general public.

The revised levy applies specifically to high-octane fuel, which is primarily used in luxury vehicles.

The government clarified that there will be no increase in fuel prices for ordinary or mid-range vehicles, ensuring that the financial impact remains limited to higher-end consumers.

The move is part of broader efforts by the government to manage expenditures and boost revenue without introducing across-the-board price hikes on essential commodities.
