Daughter of PPP Senator Sherry Rehman, Marvi Malik, will be laid to rest in Karachi today after passing away at the age of 35. Her funeral prayers are scheduled for Monday at 3:30pm in DHA Phase 8, followed by the burial.
The family said Marvi died after suffering a brain haemorrhage. She had been under treatment at a private hospital in Karachi for the past several days, where her condition had deteriorated and she was placed on a ventilator before her death on Sunday.
Tributes and condolence messages poured in from across the political spectrum after news of her passing emerged. President Asif Ali Zardari expressed sorrow and prayed for strength and patience for the bereaved family. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also offered condolences, describing the death of a child as an immense grief and praying for the family to be granted fortitude in this difficult time.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, Sindh Governor Muhammad Nehal Hashmi and Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab were among those who shared messages of sympathy and prayers. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also expressed grief, while Faryal Talpur and Shazia Marri said the party stood with the family in mourning. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi also conveyed condolences.
Marvi Malik was also remembered by the arts community, including her alma mater IVS. In a statement, it said: “It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of our alumna Marvi Khorshed Malik. Marvi graduated from Department of Fine Art in 2010. Her work contributed to an evolving conversation within Pakistan’s contemporary art landscape.” The institution extended condolences to her family, friends and all those whose lives she touched.
Her passing has drawn grief not only because of her family’s public profile, but also because of the mark she left through her work and presence in Pakistan’s art community.
