E-commerce platform Shopify is grappling with a significant login disruption during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year, preventing merchants from accessing their stores. The outage has impacted dashboards, point-of-sale systems, mobile apps, and even customer support channels.
Shopify’s status page reported the first signs of trouble at 14:54 UTC, warning users that they “may experience issues when trying to login.” Shortly after, the company confirmed that the outage was affecting POS systems, mobile logins, and support access.
By 15:26 UTC, Shopify advised merchants to remain logged in on any active devices to avoid further disruptions.
WHY IT MATTERS?
The timing of the outage is particularly critical, coinciding with post-Cyber Week sales and December 1 promotions. Merchants are facing frozen operations, delayed order processing, interrupted in-store checkouts, and slower customer service – all of which can quickly translate into substantial revenue losses.
RESPONSE AND RECOVERY EFFORTS
Shopify is continuing to investigate the issue and has not provided a clear timeline for full resolution, leaving many store owners anxiously monitoring the status page. The outage was first noticed by Performance Marketing Consultant Ayisha Youusef when she could not access a client’s account.
STATUS UPDATES
19:31 UTC: Shopify identified and corrected a problem with its login authentication flow, with initial signs of POS and admin dashboard recovery.
20:38 UTC: Support wait times surged as merchants sought assistance.
22:04 UTC: Shopify reported ongoing monitoring, noting that recovery efforts were still underway.
While the authentication issue has reportedly been resolved, the platform continues to stabilise. Merchants are waiting for full restoration, with sales opportunities slipping by the hour.
