KARACHI: The Sindh government has said that annual secondary (matric) and higher secondary school (intermediate) examinations will begin from March 31 and April 15 respectively.

The provincial education department said on Thursday that the scheduled was approved at meeting of the Sindh Education Department’s steering committee chaired by Education Minister Sardar Ali Shah.

Under the decision, annual examinations for classes 9th and 10th will start from March 31 after the Eid holidays. Intermediate examinations will commence on April 15, following a gap of 15 days.

The committee also approved the start of the new academic session 2026-27 from April 1.

Matriculation results will be announced on June 1, while intermediate results are scheduled to be released by June 15, the department said.

The meeting decided to temporarily suspend implementation of the Uniform Examination Syllabus recently introduced in Sindh.

The syllabus will now be enforced for 9th and 10th classes from the 2027 annual examinations.

No changes were made to summer and winter vacation schedules.

Summer holidays will run from June 1 to July 31, while winter holidays will be observed from December 22 to December 31. However, the committee said it could reconvene in April if any adjustment to winter holidays is deemed necessary.

During discussions on a possible change to winter breaks, representatives of Cambridge schools opposed the proposal, saying their vacation schedule aligns with international calendars and should not be altered. The matter was subsequently dropped.

According to data from the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the coldest weather in Karachi and much of Sindh typically occurs in January. Education authorities had earlier revised school timings this year in response to the winter conditions.
