Sindh fixes preferred vehicle number plate fee up to Rs2 million

KARACHI: The Sindh government has fixed the fee for obtaining preferred vehicle registration numbers at up to Rs2 million, according to an official notification issued by the provincial Excise and Taxation Department.

Under the new policy, vehicle owners wishing to obtain a specific or “fancy” registration number can do so by paying an approved fee, with the maximum charge set at Rs2 million.

According to the notification, registration numbers 786 and 110 will cost Rs2 million each.

Three-digit numbers ranging from 111 to 999 (single-digit repeating series) have been priced at Rs1 million per number.

Similarly, selected three-digit numbers from 100 to 900, as well as numbers ranging from 001 to 009, will be available at a fee of Rs500,000 each.

All other choice numbers can be obtained by paying Rs300,000. The move is aimed at regulating the allocation of preferred registration numbers while generating additional revenue for the provincial government.

Sindh Excise Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla earlier said that the number plates would only be issued through official excise offices. He cautioned vehicle owners against obtaining them from unauthorised sellers, warning that number plates issued by private agents or shops would be considered invalid.

The provincial government had earlier begun rolling out the new number plates as part of a broader effort to digitise vehicle data and improve road monitoring.

it should be remembered that in June 2024, Muzzammil Kareem Paracha had purchased the most expensive and unique plate — bearing the number “A-1” — from a special series put up for sale by the Sindh government.

Paracha, an industrialist, who bought Pakistan’s most expensive and rare vehicle number plate for Rs100 million passed away in August 2025 after battling cancer.
