KARACHI: The Sindh government has decided to fix the prices of branded items sold at superstores and supermarkets in Karachi.
According to sources, it was decided to collect data regarding the production costs and profit margins of these branded products.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Bureau of Supply and Prices Director General Zahid Hussain Shar. Senior officials and representatives of Karachi’s superstores and supermarkets attended the meeting.
Zahid Hussain Shar said that all businesses must register and renew the registration of their warehouses with the Bureau of Supply.
He emphasised the importance of protecting consumer rights and enforcing the Consumer Protection Act.
He said that the government has been empowered to control the prices of essential items, prevent hoarding and profiteering, and determine the prices of essential branded products manufactured in Karachi. Prices for all branded items in Karachi will be fixed by next month, he said.
Shar said that detailed information regarding the cost of production and profit margins will first be collected. He also issued instructions to ensure proper price regulation and to curb unjust profiteering.
He further said the move is part of efforts to provide branded products to Karachi’s residents at fair prices and to help control inflation.
