SJC issues second show-cause notice to Justice Mazahar Naqvi

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Judicial Council has reissued a show-cause notice to Supreme Court judge Justice Mazahar Akbar Naqvi on a reference filed against him.

The Supreme Judicial Council meeting, chaired by Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa, reviewed the complaints against Justice Mazahar Naqvi.

According to sources, a second notice was issued to Justice Mazahar Naqvi in light of the evidence presented during the meeting.

The Supreme Judicial Council, in the show-cause notice, has asked Justice Mazahar Naqvi to submit his reply within 14 days.

Sources said that Justice Mazahir Naqvi has been asked to provide clarification on 10 issues in the show-cause notice.

The sources further state that the show-cause notice to Justice Mazahar Naqvi received a majority of four to one, with Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa, Justice Sardar Tariq, Justice Ameer Bhatti, and Justice Naeem Afghan supporting the issuance of the show-cause notice. Only Justice Ijazul Hassan opposed it.

Earlier, Justice Mazahar Naqvi had objected to the omission of details regarding the complaints against him in the show-cause notice.

The Supreme Judicial Council dedicated three days to examining the complaints and objections against Justice Mazahar Naqvi.

The Supreme Judicial Council had issued the first show-cause notice to Justice Mazahar Naqvi on October 27, which he has challenged in the Supreme Court, asserting that the ongoing campaign against him constitutes a direct assault on the judiciary’s independence.
