Lahore: Citizens in various cities of Punjab, especially Lahore, are grappling with severe smog, which is not just an atmospheric nuisance but also a significant health concern, leading to respiratory problems. The causes of smog are multifarious, ranging from industrial emissions to vehicular pollution, and its effects are equally detrimental, impairing visibility and exacerbating asthma and other respiratory conditions.
Lahore, often known as the city of gardens, has once again found itself at the top of the list of the world’s most polluted cities, with an air quality index (AQI) of 430 on Thursday. This situation is prompting increased smog awareness among the populace and authorities alike.
Breathing has become a significant challenge for the residents. In response to this dire situation, the Punjab government has declared a state of emergency in the city. Authorities have put forward recommendations to help individuals protect themselves from smog, asserting that wearing face masks when venturing outside is now a necessary precaution, rather than a mere suggestion.
Punjab imposes smog emergency, masks mandatory for schools
Punjab imposes smog emergency, and masks are mandatory, especially for schools, which are considering smog school closure policies to safeguard the health of children. Such decisions are made with the understanding that the young lungs are particularly vulnerable to the pernicious effects of smog.
CURRENT AQI
The AQI at Syed Maratab Ali Road in Lahore reached 454, while it was 410 at Gang Ram and 311 at The Mall, indicating how pervasive the problem is. With Lahore’s air quality frequently competing for the dubious title of most polluted city in the world, the urgency for lasting solutions is palpable.
The minimum temperature in the provincial capital was 21 degrees Celsius, with expectations of it rising to 30 degrees Celsius later in the day. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Office has forecast dry weather for the city in the next 24 hours, which may offer little respite in dispersing the smog.
The situation underscores the critical need for a sustainable approach to tackle pollution sources and enhance smog awareness and prevention strategies, to ensure the health and well-being of Punjab’s residents.
