PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi paid a visit to Central Jail Peshawar on Monday, unveiling a modern security system worth Rs44 crore.
The move is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to modernize the province’s prison system and improve conditions for inmates.
Highlighting a focus on rehabilitation alongside punishment, the Chief Minister announced a special two-month remission for prisoners across all jails and allocated Rs 2 crore specifically to upgrade facilities at Central Jail Peshawar. He also instructed the creation of a digital complaint cell to ensure that prisoners’ grievances are addressed promptly.
As part of the modernization drive, all jails in the province will be solarized, and plans are underway to establish hospitals inside the jails, as well as separate, secure cells for women and young prisoners to ensure their safety and well-being.
“The role of jails is not just to punish but to reform,” Afridi said, emphasizing that the goal is to help inmates reintegrate as responsible and productive citizens.
Officials say these steps reflect a broader effort to bring a positive, lasting change to the province’s prison system, combining modern infrastructure with rehabilitation-focused programs.
