‘Sonic 4’ cast reveal stuns with Keanu Reeves, Idris Elba and huge new names

Sonic 4

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has officially revealed its full cast, and the next instalment is shaping up to be the franchise’s most ambitious yet.

Keanu Reeves and Idris Elba are returning as Shadow and Knuckles, while Jim Carrey reprises his role as Dr Robotnik. Ben Schwartz continues as the voice of Sonic, joined once again by James Marsden and Tika Sumpter.

But it is the new additions that are driving buzz.

Oscar winner Ben Kingsley and Parks and Recreation star Nick Offerman are among several high-profile newcomers, alongside Kristen Bell, Matt Berry and Richard Ayoade. Kristen Bell will voice Amy Rose, a key character from the games who is making her debut in the live-action film series.

The film is set to release in cinemas on March 19, 2027.

While plot details remain tightly under wraps, the return of Shadow and the introduction of Amy Rose suggest a larger, more character-focused storyline with higher emotional stakes. The franchise has already crossed $1 billion at the global box office, cementing its place as one of the most successful video game adaptations ever.

Director Jeff Fowler returns to helm the fourth film, continuing his run across the entire series.

The scale of the announcement also points to bigger long-term plans. Paramount has already confirmed an untitled Sonic universe event film for December 22, 2028, signalling that the franchise is expanding well beyond a traditional sequel model.

This follows the success of the Knuckles spin-off series, which helped extend the world beyond the main storyline.

With a growing ensemble cast, a confirmed release date and a wider universe in development, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is positioning itself as a major franchise event rather than just another sequel.

The countdown to its next chapter has officially begun.
