South Africa stun England to reach first-ever Women’s World Cup final

GUWAHATI: South Africa made history by defeating England in the semi-final of the Women’s World Cup.

In the match played in Guwahati, South Africa thrashed England by 125 runs in a one-sided contest to reach the Women’s One-Day World Cup final for the first time.

Batting first, the Proteas scored 319 for seven in the allotted 50 overs. Captain Laura Wolvaardt played a career-best knock of 169 off 143 balls, studded with 20 fours and four sixes.

Tazmin Brits scored 45, while Marizanne Kapp contributed a brisk 42. Sune Tryon remained unbeaten on 33 and Nadine de Klerk on 11.

For England, Sophie Ecclestone took four wickets, while Lauren Bell claimed two.

In reply, England were bundled out for 194 in 42.3 overs. The top three batters — Amy Jones, Tammy Beaumont, and Heather Knight — were dismissed for ducks.

Nat Sciver-Brunt scored 64 and Alice Capsey made 50 to offer some resistance, but their efforts couldn’t save England. Danni Wyatt added 34, and Linsey Smith made 27 before getting out.

Marizanne Kapp starred with the ball, taking five wickets to dismantle England’s batting lineup. Nadine de Klerk bagged two wickets, while Ayabonga Khaka, Nonkululeko Mlaba, and Suné Luus took one apiece.

The second semi-final will be played today between defending champions Australia and hosts India.

Of the 12 editions held so far, Australia have won seven titles, England four, and New Zealand one. South Africa now have the chance to create history by winning their maiden Women’s World Cup trophy.
