Special investigative committee begins session in Mir Raza murder case in Karachi

KARACHI: A special investigative committee formed to probe the alleged murder of young businessman Mir Raza began its meeting on Monday, chaired by DIG Aamir Farooqi.

According to sources, the team will conduct a fresh, complete review of the case file, with all members, including the head, being provided a full case briefing. The meeting is set to review all investigations carried out so far, along with the post-mortem report. Following the meeting, the investigative team is expected to meet with the victim’s parents. The team will also carry out a full inspection of the crime scene, which has been sealed off and taped by police, with a police presence maintained at the site.

Ali’s disappearance into a murder case, following the exhumation of his body and a fresh medico-legal examination. Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code, relating to murder, had been added to the FIR (No 795/2026) registered at Ferozabad Police Station, after the grave was exhumed and the medical board completed a new post-mortem and sample collection.

The move marks a significant shift in the case, which was initially registered as a kidnapping after Raza went missing from Karachi in late July; his body was later recovered bearing a gunshot wound.

Separately, Mir Raza’s father, Mir Hussain has said that he does not want a judicial commission formed to investigate his son’s case, saying he instead trusts the newly constituted investigative committee.

Speaking to the media, he said the interior minister and Mayor Karachi had visited the previous day and suggested forming a judicial commission, but that the family had informed the interior minister, the mayor, the AIG and the SSP of their position within 20 minutes of that meeting. He said he trusted the investigative committee being formed under DIG Aamir Farooqi, describing Farooqi as an officer of good reputation. “Within four to five days, the results of this [investigative committee] will come out. After that, we’ll approach some other avenue if needed,” he said.

He also requested that a technically qualified investigation team be included alongside Farooqi in the process.

Hussain raised several questions about the ongoing investigation, asking why his son’s business partner, who has also been missing for the past 10 days, had not yet been questioned by police. He said the family had not been informed about what investigation, if any, had been carried out involving staff at a guest house in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, adding that CCTV footage from the guest house had still not been made public, nor had any details been shared about individuals arrested or those who fled the scene. “No details about the guest house are coming forward,” he said.

He further complained that police had been giving media briefings on the case without informing the family of the same details. “For 11 days, no government representative has come to us. No one has listened to the parents, who have been saying all along that this was murder,” he said.

Mir Raza Ali first went missing on July 28, 2026, after leaving his home. His body was recovered the next day near Gulistan-e-Jauhar. Initial attempts were made to frame the case as a suicide linked to financial losses, debt and monetary disputes, with an alleged audio clip surfacing that referenced payments owed. However, following strong protests from the family and their lack of trust in the investigation, the court ordered the exhumation of Mir Raza’s body at Tariq Road graveyard under the supervision of a medical board. The subsequent post-mortem report found that the victim had been shot from behind (in the back) and that there were signs of torture on the body, findings that the family said confirmed their suspicion of murder.
