Starmer to host Hormuz talks as Trump hints at NATO exit

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that Britain will host a multi-nation meeting on the Strait of Hormuz this week, as tensions in the Middle East continue to rise alongside fresh remarks from US President Donald Trump on the Iran conflict and NATO.

Speaking in London, Starmer said the UK would act firmly in its national interest despite mounting pressure to take a clearer side in the war. He emphasised the need for stability in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global oil supplies, and confirmed that international partners would gather to address security concerns in the region.

His comments came as Trump suggested the conflict with Iran could end within “two to three weeks,” while also revealing he is seriously considering withdrawing the United States from NATO. The US president has repeatedly criticised allies for not participating more actively in the war effort.

Starmer, however, made it clear that the UK would not be forced into choosing between its relationship with Washington and its ties with Europe. He stressed that maintaining strong partnerships on both fronts remains essential, particularly in areas such as defence, energy, and economic cooperation.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signalled openness to ending the conflict, provided guarantees are in place to prevent renewed hostilities.

Despite these developments, fighting across the region continues, with ongoing strikes involving Israel and Iran, as well as reported damage in Lebanon. The situation remains volatile, though recent diplomatic signals have raised cautious hopes for de-escalation.
