Sony has kicked off 2026 with a content-heavy State of Play, delivering more than an hour of announcements, trailers and surprise reveals spanning major franchises, long-awaited updates and new original projects.
The February showcase, streamed by Sony Interactive Entertainment, featured updates from first-party studios alongside third-party partners, with one announcement dominating the conversation: confirmation that a remake of the original God of War Greek trilogy is in early development.
The presentation closed with an unexpected launch, as God of War: Sons of Sparta, a 2D action platformer developed with Mega Cat Studios, was released immediately on PlayStation 5.
James Bond, Castlevania and horror returns
Among the biggest reveals was 007 First Light, a new James Bond origin story from IO Interactive that offers a closer look at Bond’s early years before earning his place in MI6’s revived 00 programme.
The trailer teased espionage set-pieces in Iceland and introduced a rogue former British operative as the central antagonist, positioning the game as a more grounded take on the iconic spy.
Classic franchises also made a strong showing. Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse was announced as a new 2D action-exploration title coming to PS5 later this year, developed jointly by Konami, Evil Empire and Motion Twin. Meanwhile, Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered was confirmed for March 3 on PS5 and PS4, featuring upgraded visuals, refined controls and additional archival content.
Horror fans were treated to fresh footage from Resident Evil Requiem, which launches on February 27, alongside new details on Silent Hill: Townfall, a first-person entry that introduces a new town, story-driven puzzles and a retro-inspired device central to its gameplay.
Major release dates confirmed
Several high-profile titles locked in release windows during the showcase. Highlights included:
- Death Stranding 2: On the Beach confirmed for PC on March 19, with new features also arriving on PS5 via an update the same day
- MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls launching on August 6 for PS5 and PC
- Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 arriving on August 27
- Ghost of Yōtei Legends launching March 10 as part of a free cooperative multiplayer update
Capcom also shared extended gameplay from Pragmata, set to launch on April 24, while Bungie announced a Marathon Server Slam event beginning February 26, giving players early access to select content.
New worlds and surprise reveals
Original IPs featured heavily throughout the presentation. Beast of Reincarnation, a one-person, one-dog action RPG set in a far-future Japan, launches on August 4. Crimson Moon and Project Windless introduced contrasting dark fantasy worlds, while Darwin’s Paradox stood out with its octopus-led stealth gameplay and a demo releasing immediately.
One of the more unexpected announcements came from Saber Interactive, which revealed it is developing a new John Wick game in collaboration with the creators of the film franchise. While the official title and release date remain unconfirmed, the project promises cinematic gunplay and stylised action inspired by the films.
PlayStation Plus updates
Sony also outlined upcoming additions to PlayStation Plus. Big Walk will launch day one into PlayStation Plus Monthly Games later this year, while classics such as Tekken Dark Resurrection and Time Crisis are heading to PlayStation Plus Premium in the coming months.
February’s Game Catalog update includes Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Neva and Season: A Letter to the Future, all available from February 17.
With franchise revivals, surprise launches and long-awaited updates, February’s State of Play has set the tone for a busy year ahead on PlayStation.
