Summer holidays extended in Punjab schools

summer vacations announced for Punjab schools

LAHORE: The Punjab government has extended summer vacations in all public and private schools across the province until August 31 due to ongoing weather conditions.

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat announced on Thursday that both government and private schools will now reopen on September 1, instead of the previously scheduled date in mid-August.

The decision was taken in light of the persistent hot and humid weather, as well as intermittent rainfall across parts of the province.

Officials noted that in the absence of rain, temperatures had become unbearable for students, especially in areas with limited ventilation and cooling facilities.

Keeping in view the prevailing weather situation and in the interest of students’ health, the summer break has been extended until the end of August, the minister said.

Earlier, schools were expected to reopen in the second week of August, but parents and teachers had raised concerns over the extreme heat, prompting authorities to reconsider.

The Punjab government had announced early summer vacations on May 20 for schools across the province due to the extreme heatwave.

The Punjab education minister had said in a social media post that all public and private schools will begin summer break from May 28.

Earlier, the Punjab School Education Department sent a summary to the chief minister, seeking approval to begin summer holidays from June 1, in accordance with the annual academic calendar.

However, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab had already raised the alarm over soaring temperatures, warning of a possible heatwave from May 20 to May 24.

Meanwhile, parents were repeatedly urging the authorities to announce summer vacations in Punjab schools amid the extreme heat.

As a result, the holiday schedule was announced, with summer vacations starting from May 28 and continuing until August 9.
