SUPARCO launches Space4Climate Initiative to strengthen climate action in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has launched the Space4Climate Initiative to boost climate resilience and support sustainable development across the country.

The program uses advanced space-based technology to provide accurate, real-time insights into environmental and climate changes.

At the heart of the initiative is the GeoAI-enabled Climate Observatory, a smart platform that combines satellite data, geospatial analytics, and climate modeling.

This integrated system delivers actionable information for policymakers, researchers, and communities, helping them make informed decisions on climate action.

The observatory monitors key environmental indicators such as atmospheric pollutants (aerosols, SOx, NOx), greenhouse gases (CO₂ and methane), forests, glaciers, coastal areas, rivers, and land use.

It also tracks climate-related hazards like floods, droughts, heatwaves, sea-level rise, and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).

By integrating space-based and on-ground data, Space4Climate supports evidence-based policies and timely responses to climate challenges.

The initiative aligns with global climate efforts while strengthening Pakistan’s capacity to tackle environmental risks and build long-term resilience.
