ZURICH: Switzerland has said that initial talks between the United States and Iran are scheduled to take place on Friday at the Bürgenstock resort, following the signing of a ceasefire agreement between the two countries.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Swiss foreign ministry said the planned meeting would bring together representatives from the United States and Iran, along with mediating countries Pakistan and Qatar, as well as other involved parties.

“As things stand, the plan is still for the U.S. and Iran, along with mediators Pakistan and Qatar and other involved countries, to meet tomorrow at Bürgenstock for initial negotiations about implementing the agreement,” the ministry said.

The Swiss government added that the discussions would focus on the early stages of implementing the ceasefire framework recently agreed between Washington and Tehran. However, it stressed that no further details regarding the schedule, format or agenda of the meeting were available at this stage.

The Bürgenstock resort, located in central Switzerland, has previously hosted high-level diplomatic meetings and is being used again as a neutral venue for the sensitive negotiations.

The talks come after the announcement of a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran earlier this week, which has been presented as a step towards de-escalation after months of heightened tensions. The deal is expected to be followed by a series of technical and political discussions aimed at working out mechanisms for implementation.

Switzerland’s confirmation of the meeting reiterates its traditional role as a facilitator of international diplomacy and a neutral host for negotiations between states in conflict.

Pakistan and Qatar, both involved in mediation efforts leading up to the agreement, are expected to play supporting roles in the upcoming discussions. Further updates on the outcome of the Buergenstock meeting are expected once talks conclude.
