LAHORE: In a move set to transform the look of classrooms across the province, the Punjab government has made a formal dress code mandatory for teachers in all public schools. This means that educators too will now follow a uniform policy much like their students.

The directive, issued by the School Education Department, will take effect from Monday, February 23, 2026, and applies to all government schools across Punjab. Under the new rules, teachers will be required to adhere to a prescribed standard of dress during school hours, with black gowns made compulsory while teaching.

Male teachers have been instructed to wear simple shalwar kameez or pant and shirt, while female teachers must adopt dignified and modest attire. The addition of black gowns during instructional hours is aimed at promoting discipline, uniformity and a professional academic environment.

Authorities have warned that violations of the dress code will invite disciplinary action. Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of education authorities in all districts have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the new policy.

Officials say the measure is intended to reinforce professionalism and create a more structured atmosphere in public schools – a change that will soon make teachers as uniform in appearance as the students they teach.
