Team USA’s women’s hockey team has declined an invitation from US President Donald Trump to attend his State of the Union address, citing prior commitments following their Olympic triumph.
In a statement reported by NBC News, a USA Hockey spokesperson said the team was grateful for the invitation but could not attend due to scheduling conflicts.
“We are sincerely grateful for the invitation extended to our gold medal–winning U.S. Women’s Hockey Team and deeply appreciate the recognition of their extraordinary achievement,” the spokesperson said.
“Due to the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments following the Games, the athletes are unable to participate.”
The spokesperson added that the players were honoured to be included and appreciated the acknowledgement.
The decision comes after Trump drew criticism over remarks made during a congratulatory call with the men’s hockey team following their gold medal victory at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
During the call, Trump laughed while telling players, “We’re going to have to bring the women’s team, you do know that. I do believe I probably would be impeached,” prompting laughter from those in the locker room.
FBI Director Kash Patel also faced backlash after travelling to Italy to celebrate with the men’s team and placing the call to Trump following their win.
Despite the controversy, the invitation was formally extended to the women’s team, which ultimately chose not to attend.
The US women clinched gold last Thursday with a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory over Canada. Hilary Knight forced extra time with a late deflection before Megan Keller struck the winner. The game became the most-watched women’s hockey match of all time.
Three days later, the US men defeated Canada by the same 2-1 overtime scoreline, with Jack Hughes netting the gold-medal winner. It marked the first time since the famed ‘Miracle on Ice’ squad that the US men have won Olympic hockey gold.
