Teyana Taylor has hit back after her reaction to Amy Madigan’s Oscars win drew heavy criticism online, insisting her response was genuine and calling it “real sportsmanship”.
The actress, who lost best supporting actress to Madigan at Sunday night’s Academy Awards, quickly became a talking point after she was seen jumping to her feet and clapping enthusiastically as the winner made her way to the stage.
While some viewers praised the moment, others accused Taylor of doing too much, with the clip rapidly gaining traction across social media.

Responding to the backlash in a post on X, Taylor suggested critics were more comfortable with bitterness than grace.

“The world holds so much misery that miserable hearts forget the face of happiness,” she wrote.
She went on to say that people had become so used to “sore losers” that seeing “real sportsmanship” unsettled them.
Taylor also argued that celebrating someone else’s win requires a kind of grace many people never learn, adding that it is possible to lose with dignity while still showing joy for another person’s success.
Oscars drama did not end there
The reaction to Taylor’s applause was not the only reason her Oscars night made headlines.
She was also caught in a tense backstage moment after accusing a security guard of putting his hands on her during the ceremony.
In a viral clip from the aftermath, Taylor could be seen confronting someone off camera and repeatedly calling the behaviour rude, while insisting she had been shoved.
Speaking afterwards, Taylor said she does not tolerate disrespect, especially when it is unprovoked.
She suggested one member of security had crossed a line while others were simply doing their job.
A witness told E! that the incident happened as Taylor tried to access the stage area for a group photo.
Security firm responds
In a statement to Variety, Security Industry Specialists said there had been a brief interaction involving Taylor and one of its staff members during the show.
The company said its personnel had been working to manage a crowded area and ensure guest safety, adding that there had been incidental contact and that it regretted the situation escalating.
It also said the incident had been addressed internally.
Taylor stays defiant
Despite the criticism, Taylor has made it clear she is standing by her reaction.
Rather than backing down, she leaned into the moment by reposting the clip of Amy Madigan’s win and doubling down on the idea that supporting another nominee should not be mistaken for performative behaviour.
For many viewers, the moment only added to an already dramatic Oscars night for Taylor, who found herself at the centre of two separate viral moments within hours.
