The Devil Wears Prada 2 has roared back into cinemas with a massive $77 million North American debut, delivering one of the biggest openings of 2026 and far surpassing the original film’s launch.
The sequel, backed by 20th Century Studios, opened across 4,150 locations and has already pulled in a strong $233.6 million worldwide, signalling major global interest in the long-awaited follow-up.
Sequel smashes past original’s debut
The film earned $32.5 million on Friday, followed by $25 million on Saturday and $19.5 million on Sunday, comfortably beating the 2006 original’s $27.5 million opening weekend.
With a reported production budget of around $100 million, excluding marketing, the sequel is now expected to outpace the original’s $124.7 million domestic total.
Star cast fuels major turnout
The return of Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, along with director David Frankel, has played a key role in drawing audiences back.
The film revisits the world of Miranda Priestly as she faces new challenges in a changing publishing landscape.
Audience data showed a strong female turnout at 76%, with viewers aged 25–34 making up the largest share.
‘Michael’ and ‘Super Mario’ hold strong
The Michael Jackson biopic Michael dropped 44% in its second weekend, adding $54 million for a domestic total of $183.8 million and nearing the $200 million mark.
Meanwhile, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie crossed $400 million domestically after five weeks, maintaining its position as the year’s top-performing Hollywood release so far.
Box office momentum continues
Overall weekend takings reached $172.5 million, pushing the year-to-date total to $2.8 billion, around 14% ahead of 2025 at the same stage.
The strong debut of The Devil Wears Prada 2 underscores the continued appeal of star-led sequels and nostalgia-driven releases.
