The end of a nine-year era: Mohamed Salah’s farewell to Liverpool FC

After nine unforgettable years at Liverpool FC, Mohamed Salah has confirmed that the 2025–26 season will be his last at Anfield. The announcement, made jointly with the club, marks the end of one of the most remarkable eras in Premier League history.

Both Salah and Liverpool have agreed that now is the right time to part ways, despite having a contract running until 2027.

The club statement read, “It’s a mutual decision,” reflecting the respect and admiration on both sides.

Egypt-origin Salah himself stressed his desire to be transparent with his fans, ensuring supporters knew of his plans before the season concluded.

Salah joined Liverpool in 2017 and immediately began rewriting the club’s history books, fans believe.

Over the past nine years, the total goals which he has made so far are 256 from 389 appearances across all competitions. He appeared in PL (scoring 164), UEFA Champions League (making 50) and domestic cups (securing 42).  

What remains to be remembered are the record-breaking seasons that he played throughout his career. He secured 32 goals in the 2017–18 season in the PL, and made 44 in all competitions. During 2018–19, he secured 27 goals in the PL, 34 overall. And, in the 2021–22 row, secured 31 goals across competitions.

Salah’s goals have often come at critical moments. He would be needed at every important moment on the ground, and he would be the only player to play havoc. Otherwise, Liverpool would lose the game, whether it is for the league, the PL titles, Champions League triumphs, domestic cups, or in the Community Shield.

Following this, fans will remember his match-winning strikes against Man United, Arsenal, and other top sides that defined Liverpool’s modern era.

But Salah has especially faced natural challenges as he played for the team side in a row, bringing his career to its peak’s tail end.

He has experienced mixed playing time and tactical adjustments under manager Arne Slot, highlighting the evolution of both the player and the squad. He has delivered critical goals for the side this season as well.  

Salah’s early announcement reflects his deep respect for Liverpool fans.
