WEB DESK: The curtain has fallen on one of Bollywood’s most iconic eras with the passing of legendary actor Dharmendra Deol, who died at the age of 89. Known for his towering screen presence, rugged charm, and unforgettable performances, Dharmendra leaves behind a body of work that shaped Indian cinema for more than six decades.
With more than 300 films to his credit, he rose to become one of Bollywood’s most beloved and bankable stars. Audiences across generations fondly remember him as “India’s He-Man,” a title earned through his powerful roles, magnetic personality, and effortless command of the action genre.
EARLY LIFE AND RISE TO STARDOM
Born on December 8, 1935, in the small village of Nasrali in Punjab’s Ludhiana district, Dharmendra grew up in a humble household. His father worked as a headmaster, and the young boy received his early education in the same government school.

After marrying at a young age, Dharmendra moved to Mumbai to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. His debut came in 1960 with “Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere”, but his ascent to stardom truly began in the 1960s and 1970s, when he delivered one hit film after another.
His memorable performances in Aaye Din Bahar Ke, Phool Aur Patthar, Aankhen, Anupama, Bandini, Haqeeqat, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Dost, Dharam Veer, and Yaadon Ki Baaraat cemented his status as a leading man.

However, it was the 1975 blockbuster “Sholay,” where he played the iconic role of Veeru, that made him a legend. The film is widely regarded as one of the greatest in Indian cinema history.
A CONTROVERSIAL LOVE STORY AND FAMILY LEGACY
Dharmendra’s on-screen chemistry with actress Hema Malini blossomed into real life. The two married during their years of working together, though the union stirred controversy because Dharmendra was still married to his first wife, Prakash Kaur.

He fathered a famous filmi lineage: Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Esha Deol, and Ahana Deol, many of whom continue to be active in the entertainment world.
POLITICAL CAREER AND HONOURS
Beyond cinema, Dharmendra ventured into politics. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2004. His contributions to Indian cinema earned him the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997.

As Bollywood evolved, Dharmendra gracefully transitioned to character roles, appearing in films such as Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya, Life in a… Metro, Apne, Yamla Pagla Deewana, Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya.
THE LATER YEARS
In his final years, Dharmendra spent most of his time at his farmhouse in Lonavala. Despite his legendary status, he often expressed disappointment that Bollywood, in his view, did not fully acknowledge the Deol family’s legacy and contributions to the industry.
A FINAL GOODBYE TO A BOLLYWOOD GIANT
Dharmendra’s passing marks the end of an era for Indian cinema. From romantic hero to action star to veteran performer, his journey reflected the changing face of Bollywood itself. Generations grew up watching his films, mimicking his dialogue, and admiring his unmatched screen charisma.
As India mourns the loss of Dharmendra, the “He-Man” of Hindi cinema, his work remains immortal, etched forever in the history of Bollywood.
