New casting details for The hunt for Gollum have set off debate online, with Jamie Dornan stepping into the role of Aragorn, one of the most iconic characters in the Lord of the Rings franchise.
Warner Bros. confirmed the news at CinemaCon, revealing Dornan will portray Strider, Aragorn’s alias, marking a shift from Viggo Mortensen’s portrayal in the original trilogy.
The announcement has left many fans unconvinced, with some expressing disappointment at the recasting and others questioning whether any actor can step into the role without being compared to Mortensen.

Familiar faces return alongside new cast
The film, directed by Andy Serkis, will also see several original cast members return.
Serkis reprises his role as Gollum, alongside Elijah Wood as Frodo and Ian McKellen as Gandalf. Lee Pace is also set to return as Thranduil, while reports indicate Kate Winslet will join the film in a new role.
Story revisits a key gap in Tolkien lore
The hunt for Gollum will follow Aragorn’s mission to track down Gollum before he can reveal the location of the One Ring to Sauron, placing the story between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring.
The narrative draws on material from J R R Tolkien’s wider writings, expanding on events only briefly referenced in the original texts.
The project marks a major return to Middle-earth, with the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films collectively earning nearly $6 billion worldwide. It will also be the first live-action theatrical instalment in over a decade.
The hunt for Gollum is set for release on December 17, 2027, with casting decisions already driving conversation around how the franchise will handle one of its most recognisable characters.
