The surprising reason behind Kacey Musgraves’ new album ‘Middle of Nowhere’

Country star Kacey Musgraves says her upcoming album Middle of Nowhere was born out of one of the most personal periods of her life, when she found herself navigating the longest stretch of single life she had experienced as an adult.

In a new interview with NPR, Musgraves revealed that the record took shape after a breakup that forced her to rethink how she viewed relationships, independence and loneliness.

“I typically always have been in relationships,” she said. “This was the longest period in my adult life where I was on my own.”

That experience became the creative spark behind the album’s first single, ‘Dry Spell’, a cheeky and self-aware track about going without intimacy for nearly a year.

“It was a long time without any intimacy with anyone else,” Musgraves said. “I had always feared that before I experienced it, just having this notion that I needed someone to be happy, which I found to be completely untrue.”

The song opens with the singer joking about the “real long 335 days” since her last hookup, before leaning into a string of playful double entendres about loneliness and desire.

The track also signals what some fans may see as a creative shift back toward the humour and sharp storytelling that first set Musgraves apart in Nashville during the early 2010s with albums such as Same Trailer Different Park and Pageant Material.

After experimenting with the dreamy soundscapes of Golden Hour, the cinematic breakup themes of Star-Crossed and the introspective tone of Deeper Well, Musgraves said she felt pulled back toward the traditional country influences she grew up with in Texas.

“The sounds of traditional country music are baked into what feels like home to me,” she said.

Her sixth studio album, Middle of Nowhere, is scheduled to be released on May 1 and will also mark her return to Lost Highway Records, the roots-focused label that originally signed her early in her career.

The album’s title was inspired by a moment during a visit to her hometown in East Texas, where she noticed a sign that read: “Golden, Texas: Somewhere in the middle of nowhere.”

Musgraves said the phrase resonated deeply because it captured a feeling she had been experiencing in her own life.

“It can be how you feel relationally or emotionally,” she said. “It could be someone in between jobs, between relationships or even geographically speaking.”

The record will feature collaborations with country and Americana icons including Willie Nelson, Miranda Lambert, Billy Strings and Gregory Alan Isakov.

Looking back, Musgraves said the time she spent alone ultimately reshaped her outlook on relationships and creativity.

“It’s powerful to know now that I don’t need anyone to be happy,” she said. “There’s a confidence that comes with that.”
