Tommy DeCarlo, the longtime lead vocalist of the rock band Boston, has died at the age of 60 after battling brain cancer, his family announced on Monday.
In a statement shared on Facebook, DeCarlo’s children confirmed that the singer passed away on March 9, 2026, several months after being diagnosed with the illness.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our Dad, Tommy DeCarlo, on Monday, March 9, 2026,” the family wrote.
“After being diagnosed with brain cancer last September, he fought with incredible strength and courage right up until the very end.”
The statement, signed by Annie, Talia and Tommy Jr., also asked fans and friends to respect the family’s privacy as they mourn his loss.
Tommy DeCarlo stepped away from performing last year after revealing he was dealing with unexpected health issues. In October, the singer told fans he would be taking time off from the stage while focusing on his recovery.
DeCarlo became the lead singer of Boston in 2007 following the death of the band’s original vocalist Brad Delp. His path to the role was unusual. A devoted fan of the band, he had uploaded tribute performances to Delp online, recordings that eventually caught the attention of Boston founder Tom Scholz.
The performances impressed the band enough to bring DeCarlo on board. He soon became Boston’s touring frontman, performing the group’s classic songs for audiences around the world, including the iconic hit ‘More Than a Feeling’.
Over nearly two decades with the band, Tommy DeCarlo helped carry Boston’s legacy forward, introducing its catalogue of arena rock anthems to new generations of fans.
Away from Boston, DeCarlo also launched his own project. In 2012, he formed the band DECARLO with his son, continuing his work as a musician and songwriter. The group released its debut album in 2020.
He later shared his story in the 2021 audiobook Unlikely Rockstar – The Tommy DeCarlo Story, which chronicled his unexpected rise from posting tribute covers online to becoming the lead singer of one of rock’s most famous bands.
Tommy DeCarlo is survived by his children Annie, Talia and Tommy Jr.
