Trump claims “good discussions” with Iran, suggests war idea came from Hegseth

Iran war

MEMPHIS: US President Donald Trump said Iran “wants to settle” and that “really good discussions” were underway, while hinting that the idea of war with Iran came from United States Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. He made the remarks during a Memphis Safe Task Force roundtable on Monday.

Trump described the potential for military action, saying, “We can keep going and get that 50,000 up to 55 and 60… or we can take a stop and make a little journey into the Middle East and eliminate a big problem. And Pete, I think you were the first one to speak up. You said, let’s do it, because you can’t let them have a nuclear weapon.”

He added that discussions with Iran had been “very, very good” and claimed Tehran had agreed not to pursue nuclear weapons. “They want peace, they’ve agreed they will not have a nuclear weapon… we’re going to get it done,” Trump said.

However, Iran’s foreign ministry denied that any talks had taken place.

Earlier, Trump said on social media that he was postponing attacks on Iranian power plants for “five days,” after previously threatening military strikes if Iran did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The president also criticised NATO allies, singling out the UK and Prime Minister Starmer for not assisting in securing the strategic waterway. Tehran has stated the Strait is “open to friends and non-hostile countries, but closed to enemies and those who collaborate with them.”
