WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Thursday praised Japan for “stepping up” on the Iran conflict as he met Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at the White House.
Trump said Japan had shown strong support compared to NATO allies, whom he criticised for their limited backing of the US-Israeli campaign. However, he reiterated that the United States did not depend on external support.
“We don’t need anything from anyone, but it is appropriate that countries step up,” Trump said, adding that Japan’s role was important given its close ties with Washington.
Ahead of the meeting, Japan joined European countries in a joint statement expressing readiness to help stabilise energy markets and ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been disrupted amid the conflict.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said she had presented proposals to calm global energy markets and stressed that Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. She also condemned Iranian attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and warned that ongoing tensions could impact the global economy.
Japan, which relies heavily on oil imports from the Gulf, has so far not committed military support, though it is considering possible measures within constitutional limits. U.S. officials have suggested Tokyo could contribute through naval capabilities and by releasing oil reserves to ease market pressure.
The meeting also focused on strengthening economic and security ties between the two countries, with both sides reaffirming their longstanding alliance.
