California Governor Gavin Newsom has publicly denounced President Donald Trump after he shared a video depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as monkeys, calling the act “disgusting” and demanding that Republican leaders speak out.
President Trump posted the video late Thursday on his Truth Social platform during a rapid series of uploads. The clip, which initially references unfounded claims of 2020 election fraud, abruptly transitions at the 59-second mark to an AI-generated segment showing the Obamas’ faces on ape bodies, set to the 1961 song The Lion Sleeps Tonight.
The post drew immediate backlash on social media, with many users condemning it as overtly racist. Writing on X (formerly Twitter), Newsom’s press office said, “Disgusting behavior by the President. Every single Republican must denounce this. Now.”
Several social media users echoed the criticism. One wrote that Trump’s post represented “a new rock bottom,” while another described the former president as “the most openly racist President since slavery was abolished.”
This video is only one of numerous posts Trump has shared in recent days. Most focused on allegations of election fraud, which he continues to promote ahead of the upcoming midterms. In another post, Trump shared a video of Bruce Lee accompanied by the message, “This can be a great option if things don’t work out.”
The AI-generated clip of the Obamas bears a watermark linking it to an account called @XERIAS_X, previously responsible for another controversial AI video shared by Trump during last year’s “No Kings” protests. It remains unclear whether Trump personally selected the Obama clip or was aware of its inclusion in the video.

Trump’s social media activity has previously sparked accusations of racism. Last year, his Truth Social account shared a video portraying House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries wearing a fake mustache and sombrero, which Jeffries publicly denounced.
Governor Newsom has become one of Trump’s most vocal critics online, repeatedly calling out the former president’s posts as harmful and offensive.
