Trump suggests war could end when Iran’s military and leadership is eliminated

Trump warns Iran will be ‘hit very hard’ as regional war widens

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday (March 7) that the conflict with Iran might only end if the country’s military capability and leadership are completely wiped out, signaling a hardline stance as fighting in the Middle East intensifies.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said he currently has no interest in negotiations with Tehran. He suggested that the ongoing air campaign could ultimately remove Iran’s leadership structure altogether.

“At some point, there may not be anyone left to even say ‘we surrender,” Trump said, implying that the war could conclude if Iran’s military forces and potential leaders are eliminated.

Trump’s comments came as Israel and Iran continued exchanging strikes, with the conflict entering its second week. The escalating violence has raised concerns across the region. Iran’s president issued an apology to neighboring Gulf states in an attempt to ease regional tensions, though the move drew criticism from hardline factions within Iran.

Meanwhile, China called for an immediate push toward diplomacy. On Sunday (March 8), Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi described the ongoing conflict as “a war that should never have happened” while speaking to reporters during a news conference at China’s annual parliamentary session in Beijing.

Wang said China, which maintains close ties with several Middle Eastern countries, is prepared to cooperate with regional partners to promote security and stability.

“As a sincere friend and strategic partner of Middle Eastern nations, China is willing to work with them to restore order in the region, bring calm to its people, and contribute to global peace,” Wang said.

He said that all sides involved in the conflict should return to negotiations as soon as possible.

Earlier, on March 2, Wang had voiced support for Gulf states in protecting their sovereignty and security, while also backing Iran’s right to defend its legitimate interests. He also criticised US and Israeli attacks and condemned the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, calling those actions “unacceptable.”
