Two cops martyred, three injured in Bannu shootout

BANNU: At least two policemen were martyred and three others injured during a shootout with unknown assailants, who targeted a polio vaccination team.


Bannu DIG Qasim Ali said that during the initial shootout, one of the assailants was injured while another escaped to a village.
The DIG said while the policemen were chasing the injured suspect, when a second shootout took place, which resulted in the death of two policemen.


The proscribed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan has claimed responsibility for the shootout.


On Monday, an explosion near a police van had left five policemen dead and 20 others injured.


The police van was on the security of a polio team.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced a polio drive, targeting more than seven million children. Around 32,000 vaccination teams are carrying out the polio vaccination in the province.


Meanwhile, polio vaccination drive has been halted for time being in Tank and Dera Ismail Khan districts due to security concerns.
