Two months on: Twitter service remains suspended in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Despite two months having passed, the microblogging website X, formerly known as Twitter, remains suspended throughout Pakistan.

Since February 17, Twitter’s service has been suspended, and despite partial restoration during this period, it has not been fully operational.

The suspension of Twitter’s service has led to multiple petitions being filed in courts, including the Sindh High Court, demanding its restoration. The courts have also issued orders to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to restore Twitter’s service.

Despite court orders, the complete restoration of Twitter’s service has not been achieved, causing distress to millions of users across the country.

Globally, Twitter is considered a reliable source for up-to-date news and information, with millions of individuals worldwide using it to stay informed.

The recent videos exposing electoral irregularities during Pakistan’s February elections led to the suspension of Twitter’s service. However, the federal government, including the PTA, has not officially acknowledged this suspension.

In March, a letter from the Ministry of Interior instructing the PTI to suspend Twitter’s service surfaced. The letter emphasized immediate action, but the PTA’s legal representatives presented the letter during a hearing in the Sindh High Court. The court has sought a response from the Ministry of Interior by April 17.
