U.S. shuts down embassy operations in Kuwait city amid escalating regional tensions

WEB DESK: The United States has suspended all operations at its embassy in Kuwait City following a sharp escalation in the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran. The decision was announced by the U.S. Department of State after a series of retaliatory Iranian strikes targeting American interests and allied Gulf states raised significant security concerns for diplomatic staff and U.S. citizens in the region.

According to officials, the embassy has halted both routine and emergency consular services “until further notice”. While no American diplomatic personnel have been injured, the move follows several incidents earlier this week involving Iranian drone and missile attacks in the vicinity of the embassy compound.

Witnesses reported smoke rising near the area after strikes hit nearby locations, including a port facility where six American soldiers were reportedly killed by an Iranian drone on Sunday. The incidents have heightened fears of further attacks across the Gulf.

A spokesperson for the State Department stated that the protection of American citizens overseas remains its highest priority. The embassy has advised all U.S. nationals currently in Kuwait to leave the country immediately if it is safe to do so, using any available commercial or alternative transport.

Airspace Closure Complicates Evacuation

Evacuation efforts, however, have been severely complicated by the closure of Kuwait’s airspace due to ongoing threats of missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks. With commercial flights grounded, many Americans have been unable to depart the country.

For those unable to leave safely, the State Department has instructed citizens to shelter in place. Americans have been advised to remain inside secure residences, hotels or buildings, stock essential supplies including food, water and medication, and seek shelter on the lowest level of structures away from windows and exterior walls. Officials have also urged residents to avoid going outdoors and to remain vigilant for further threats.

Embassy staff are reportedly following the same safety protocols and sheltering in place within the compound. Authorities have warned that the facility should not be approached under any circumstances.

Wider Diplomatic Withdrawals Across the Region

The suspension of operations in Kuwait marks the second major U.S. diplomatic mission in the Middle East to close amid the widening conflict, following similar measures in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon. In addition, the U.S. government has ordered the evacuation of non-essential personnel and family members from several countries in the region, including Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Jordan, Iraq and Qatar.

The escalation comes in the wake of intensified retaliatory actions by Iran following joint U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets. The strikes reportedly included damage to missile and nuclear facilities as well as the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Air raid sirens have sounded repeatedly in Kuwait City in recent days, reflecting growing fears of additional missile and drone attacks across the Gulf. The United States currently maintains a Level 3 travel advisory for Kuwait, urging citizens to reconsider travel due to the risks posed by armed conflict, unexploded landmines and crime.

As the crisis continues to unfold, U.S. officials are exploring options to arrange military aircraft and charter flights to assist with evacuations. The State Department has already contacted thousands of Americans across the Middle East to provide guidance and updates on the rapidly evolving security situation.
