WEB DESK: The United Nations has launched an urgent task force to secure humanitarian maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz as escalating Middle East tensions threaten to trigger a global food security catastrophe.
Led by Jorge Moreira da Silva, the Executive Director of UNOPS, the initiative brings together a coalition of international bodies including UNCTAD, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), according to News of Bahrain.
The move comes as the vital shipping lane, responsible for nearly a third of the world’s fertilizer trade, faces unprecedented disruptions that experts warn could leave millions more facing acute hunger if essential agricultural inputs remain blocked.
A technical bridge to global stability
Building on successful precedents such as the Black Sea Grain Initiative, the Task Force aims to implement robust verification and monitoring mechanisms to ensure the safe passage of fertilizers and life-saving supplies.
By de-risking the corridor for commercial shipping and establishing clear humanitarian protocols, the UN hopes to stabilise soaring production costs for farmers worldwide.
Beyond the immediate logistical challenges, the Secretary-General’s office views this technical cooperation as a vital confidence-building measure.
It is hoped that by securing the flow of essential goods, the initiative will provide the diplomatic breathing room required for Jean Arnault, the UN’s Personal Envoy, to pursue a broader and more permanent political resolution to the regional conflict.
