University teachers to stage sit-in outside HEC tomorrow

HEC LAT Key 2023

ISLAMABAD: The All Public University BPS Teachers Association (APUBTA), a registered and elected representative body of the BPS teachers of public sector universities of Pakistan, has announced a protest and sit-in outside the head office of Higher Education Commission (HEC), Sector H-9, Islamabad on October 31.

The APUBTA has announced the protest against what it calls “the discriminatory and exploitative policies of the HEC and for their fundamental rights.”

University teachers from all over Pakistan will join the protest sit-in.

In a press release, the association said that the BPS teachers are the only cadre of government employees in Pakistan who have no right to promotion in their services, while all other government, civil, military and public servants have such rights.

“This is all due to the criminal negligence of HEC and the violation of Section-10(q) of its ordinance for over 54,000 BPS university teachers in Pakistan,” it said.

“The APUBTA has been pleading its case for the last three years with the HEC officials but to no avail. HEC authorities have signed three to four written agreements with APUBTA and FAPUASA leadership, promising to approve the service structure and promotion policy for public-sector universities’ BPS teachers within a specified time and also gave this promise to the standing committee on higher education of the National Assembly as well as the special committee of the National Assembly. However, HEC has so far done nothing concrete to honour its promise,” it said.

“In view of the above, APUBTA has decided to organise a protest sit-in outside the HEC office, H-9, Islamabad on Tuesday at 11 am. The sit-in will continue until the notification regarding the approval of the service structure and promotion policy by HEC is issued,” it said.
