Unregistered taxpayers: FBR all set to cut electricity, telephone connections

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has announced that it will disconnect the electricity and telephone connections of unregistered taxpayers in order to expand the tax base as per the International Monetary Fund (IMF) demand.
A spokesperson for the FBR told Geo News that more than 8.195 million unregistered people have been issued notices for the tax years 2022 and 2023. The notices were issued under the Income Tax General Order, he said.
The spokesperson said that this was the first phase of the action plan, and in the second phase, the FBR will target the unregistered large taxpayers and cut off their telephone connections. The FBR will also disconnect the electricity connections of these people in the second phase, he said.

Sources said that the FBR has obtained the details of these people from their bank transactions. The data of purchase and sale of properties by the businessmen has been obtained with the help of NADRA.
The IMF has made it a condition for sanctioning the loan that Pakistan should bring more people into the tax net.
