WEB DESK: The United States Air Force has formalised a significant $488m (£385m) agreement with Northrop Grumman Systems Corp to provide long-term engineering and technical services for the F-16 Fighting Falcon’s radar systems.
The deal, structured as a firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract, ensures the operational longevity of the fleet’s critical sensory hardware over the next decade, according to Dawn News.
Notably, the contract includes support for international partners, with Pakistan named among the primary nations set to benefit from the sustained technical oversight.
Global fleet maintenance and technical scope
The contract is specifically designed to support the APG-66 and APG-68 radar systems, which serve as the “eyes” of the F-16 fighter jet.
These systems are integral to the aircraft’s ability to engage in air-to-air combat and precision ground strikes.
Under the terms of the agreement, Northrop Grumman will provide essential engineering expertise and hardware support to ensure these legacy systems remain viable against evolving modern threats.
By securing this long-term commitment, the US Air Force aims to maintain a high level of readiness for both domestic squadrons and allied nations integrated into the F-16 programme.
Strategic timelines and international impact
Work on the project will be headquartered at Northrop Grumman’s facilities in Linthicum Heights, Maryland, with a projected completion date of 31 March 2036.
The inclusion of Pakistan in the award notice underscores the continued bilateral cooperation regarding the maintenance of their existing F-16 fleet, which remains a cornerstone of their aerial defence strategy.
This twenty-year horizon provides a stable framework for the global supply chain, ensuring that the Fighting Falcon remains a potent asset in international hangars well into the mid-2030s.
