WASHINGTON: The United States has approved a $686 million upgrade package for the Pakistan Air Force’s (PAF) F-16 fleet, according to a letter sent by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) to Congress on December 8.
Following the DSCA notification, a formal 30-day congressional review period has begun, during which US lawmakers will debate the proposed transfer of F-16 technology to Pakistan.
According to the agency, the proposed sale will support US foreign policy and national security objectives by helping Pakistan maintain interoperability with US and allied forces for ongoing counterterrorism operations and future potential missions.
The upgrade package includes Link-16 systems, cryptographic equipment, avionics updates, training, and comprehensive logistical support.
The development comes after a series of cordial meetings between Pakistan’s civilian and military leadership and the US President.
The DSCA letter stated that the sale would sustain and strengthen Pakistan’s ability to address current and emerging threats by modernising and overhauling its Block-52 and Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) F-16 fleet.
It added that the upgrades would enhance operational integration and interoperability between the PAF and the US Air Force in combat operations, exercises and training, while also extending the aircraft’s service life to 2040 and addressing key safety concerns.
