US crush Samoa in Women’s Rugby World Cup clash

YORK: The United States thrashed Samoa 60-0 in their final Pool A match at the Women’s Rugby World Cup on Saturday, but must wait on the outcome of England’s clash with Australia to learn whether they will advance to the quarter-finals.

The Americans ran in 10 unanswered tries at York Community Stadium, with Freda Tafuna scoring four, Hope Rogers adding two, and Cassidy Bargell, Erica Coulibaly, Erica Jarrell-Searcy and Olivia Ortiz crossing once each.

The emphatic win gave the US a crucial bonus point, taking their tally to eight.

Their progression, however, depends on Australia’s performance against tournament favourites England later in the day.

For the US to secure second place in the pool, England would need to beat the Wallaroos by 76 points while also denying them a bonus point.

If Australia lose but pick up a bonus point, the final spot will be decided on points difference.

The US currently sit at minus two, while Australia are at plus 73 after earlier wins over Samoa and a draw against the Americans.

Samoa, who exit the tournament with just three points, again showed heart but fell short of scoring their first try despite several close chances in a spirited second-half effort.

The Pacific Islanders conceded 225 points across their three matches.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Canada sealed top spot in Pool B with a 40-19 victory over Scotland at Sandy Park in Exeter.

Already assured of a quarter-final place, the Canadians scored through Emily Tuttosi (two), McKinley Hunt, Brittany Kassil, Olivia DeMerchant and a penalty try.

Scotland, who had already qualified for the knockouts, fought hard and dominated possession but were undone by repeated errors.

Rhona Lloyd, Evie Gallagher and Fran McGhie, who scored her sixth try of the tournament, crossed for the Scots.
