The United States has announced a new round of sanctions targeting several prominent Cuban figures, including Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel and his wife.

According to US officials, the sanctions also include the son and grandson of former Cuban President Raúl Castro, despite neither holding a government position.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that sanctions have also been imposed on Cuba’s Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, Amistur Cuba, the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, and Minera La Victoria S.A.

Relations between the United States and Cuba have long been strained. In recent months, however, the administration of US President Donald Trump has increased pressure on the island nation. The latest measures come as Cuba continues to grapple with a severe energy crisis that has further strained its already fragile economy.

President Trump said in a statement that Cuba is a beautiful country but argued that its current government needs change. He added that his administration is closely monitoring developments in Cuba.

The US president further stated that his immediate focus remains on issues related to Iran and that his administration will turn greater attention to Cuba-related measures after addressing those concerns.

There was no immediate official response from the Cuban government to the latest sanctions or President Trump’s remarks. However, relations between the two countries remain tense amid longstanding political and diplomatic disagreements.
