US-Iran Talks: Trump dispatches high-level delegation to Islamabad for Saturday summit

WEB DESK: A high-level American delegation, led by Vice President JD Vance, is set to arrive in Islamabad this weekend for pivotal negotiations with Iranian officials aimed at de-escalating tensions in West Asia.

The White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, confirmed that President Donald Trump is dispatching a formidable team to the Pakistani capital, including Middle East Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

The discussions, scheduled to commence on Saturday morning, follow a fragile two-week ceasefire that has provided a narrow window for diplomatic intervention.

Pakistan’s role as the host underscores its significant position as a regional mediator, with Islamabad serving as a neutral ground where both Washington and Tehran have agreed to engage in face-to-face dialogue.

A new chapter for regional diplomacy

The presence of Vice President JD Vance and Jared Kushner signals the high priority the Trump administration is placing on securing a lasting peace agreement.

While the Iranian side is expected to be represented by senior figures such as Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the agenda remains fraught with complex challenges.

Negotiators are expected to grapple with critical issues including Iran’s nuclear programme and regional military activities.

Despite the significant “red lines” maintained by both nations, the Islamabad summit represents the most substantial effort to date to transition from a temporary cessation of hostilities toward a comprehensive diplomatic framework.
